An important topic too often ignored.

Our society needs to come to grips with human addiction and rather than criminalize the addicts see them as people who desperate need help.

What’s so horrible if Grandma takes Vicodin for her arthritis and it also makes her happy?

My wife has legitimate chronic pain that needs to be managed and its becoming harder and harder for her to get the meds she needs because doctors are so leery of prescribing them.

I completely understand, Dragonfire- Before my fathers death he went through agonizing pain. Over the years i noticed doctors hesitant to prescribe pain medicine. It was a constant battle i fought with them. At one point, i was so desperate to get him some pain relief that i found someone to sell me pot and had to ask the kid at the gas station where i bought the ‘papers’ to show me how to roll a joint. When that didn’t work i tried to find heroin but couldn’t.
I am in no way blaming the pill addicts (lookin’ at you Limbaugh). Of course there will be people who become addicts to whatever is available. Drugs make people feel good. And there is a lot of psychological pain in our world. But there has got to be a better understanding of pain management in this country. Too many doctors-and the general public- have this belief that pain is somehow noble. No it isn’t.

One cannot have a civilized society without a “few pleasant little vices”. I believe that is how it is written in Brave New World. There is a lot of truth in that.

Yeah, it would be really cool if everyone would learn Yoga and Meditation/Prayer/Whatever—to take care of their own little pains and frustrations. But guess what? not every one is going to do that or be able to do it consistently. Pain from Cancer is not something the average human is made to “deal” with.

Luckily for my father, once he got into Hospice, pain meds weren’t an issue. When a person is asking for a firearm and bullets to end their pain, I think perhaps, meds might be better—no?

I talked with a Doctor today about it and he said a lot of the problem is the Military Doctors. They are liberal with the pain meds for soldiers which is good —but it also has the downside of abuse by soldiers.

I never thought of that aspect.
